Bennison, 1989 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Family of "Vermont" Henry Loop Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1989] Henry LOOP [Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was probably the Henry, son of Ensign Henry LOOP and Nelly SHARP, born along with a twin sister Rachel on August 9, 1780 and christened at Schagticoke. Recent family tradition says Henry was born in Alburg, Vermont, but this is unlikely, as Alburg was not settled at that time. Recent family tradition also says his name was "Richard Henry Loop." But no record has turned up to support a first name of Richard. His daughter Betsy called him simply Henry LOOP, and that is how his name appears in the 1820 federal census. If he is the son of Ensign Henry, then his christening record likewise does not support the name Richard. Family tradition says he married Elizabeth HOOKER, the widow of a man named ALDRICH, about 1801 in Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York. Several groups of HOOKER's came from Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont and settled near Ensign Henry LOOP. Gilbert HOOKER and his son Gilbert HOOKER, Jr., settled in Stillwater where Ensign Henry had lived before moving north to Lake Luzerne in Washington County. Ira Allen HOOKER settled in Hadley, which is only a mile or two from Lake Luzerne. Riverious HOOKER, for whom Henry LOOP probably named his third son, settled in Washington County, and is possibly Elizabeth's father, but at least a brother. Riverious HOOKER and Henry LOOP are living side by side in McKean County, Pennsylvania, in 1820. Henry's brother Andrew LOOP, married an Anna HOOKER as his second wife, probably not too long after his first wife died, around 1805. The Vermont origins of the HOOKER's may have been responsible somehow for Henry's brief sojourn in that state. The first three children of Henry LOOP and Elizabeth HOOKER were born in New York in 1802, 1804 and 1806. The next child, Rodolphus, was apparently born in Vermont in 1807. In 1810, another child is born back in Saratoga County, New York. So any stay by Henry in Vermont was quite short. Henry and Elizabeth then moved westward across New York state ending up in McKean County, Pennsylvania, possibly as early as 1813, when, according to family records, a son Almond was born in Pennsylvania. By 1820 they were definitely in McKean County, as they were censused there that year. Their last child was born in Pennsylvania in 1825. Their daughter Betsy claimed her father died in Chautauqua County, New York in 1836, not far from Jamestown. This is possible, though Henry LOOP has not been found in any 1830 census record. There is a Henry LOOP in the 1830 census of Chautauqua County, but the ages and numbers of children do not match "Vermont" Henry and family, nor do they match his son Henry. I believe the Henry in the 1830 census is a son of Andrew LOOP, "Vermont" Henry's brother. Even so, only five years later in the 1835 census, instead of this other Henry LOOP, "Vermont" Henry's son John LOOP is living in the same house in Ellicott township near Jamestown. A few houses away is a James DRAKE, possibly the James DRAKE who married "Vermont" Henry's daughter Betsy. So it is likely that this is where "Vermont" Henry LOOP died in 1836, as a young man of about 45. The children of Henry LOOP and Elizabeth HOOKER were: + 1. John LOOP, b. January 26, 1802, in NY, m. Eliza HOOKER, d. August 4, 1886, buried at Loop Hollow Cemetery, Eldred, McKean, PA. + 2. Henry LOOP, b. January 27, 1804, in NY, m. Amy DIKEMAN, d. near 1830. His widow married William HOOKER. + 3. Riverious ("Vere") LOOP, b. January 12, 1806, in NY, m. Mary Ann DIKEMAN, d. May 4, 1879, buried in Loop Hollow Cemetery, Eldred, McKean, PA. + 4. Roldolphus ("Adolf") LOOP, b. April 18, 1807, in VT or NY, m. Phebe ALDRICH, d. about 1891, Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, NY. 5. Almond LOOP, b. May 25, 1810, in Saratoga County, NY. + 6. Daniel LOOP, b. May 13, 1813, in PA, m. about 1839, Polly DIKEMAN. + 7. Norris ("Norry") LOOP, b. March 9, 1817, in PA or NY, m. 1839, Clarissa FROST, d. 1898, buried Bay View Cemetery, Bay View, WA. 8. Elizabeth ("Betsy") LOOP, b. May, 1820, in PA, m. James DRAKE, probably in NY. They moved to PA in 1857. Their chilren: a. Emmeline DRAKE, b. July 12, 1837, in NY, m. Philer LOOP, son of Riverious LOOP. They were still living in PA in 1883, and she lived until at least 1891. 9. Harriet LOOP, b. 1821, in NY, m. James PALMETER. 10. Aby LOOP, b. February 22, 1824, in PA, married George W. FROST, d. December 10, 1889, buried Loop Hollow Cemetery, Eldred, McKean, PA. 11. Ainsley LOOP, b. 1824, in PA, m. Phebe ___?___. 12. Willis M. LOOP, b. 1825, in PA. John LOOP [Henry(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], was born February 26, 1802, in New York state. In 1820 he was living with his father in McKean County, PA. He married Eliza HOOKER, probably in Pennsylvania. She was born May 22, 1809, in New York. John and Eliza may have moved to New York soon after their marriage. Their first child was born there in 1825. They have not been found, however, in the 1825 or 1830 census of New York. They are censused in Chautauqua County in 1835, apparently in the same house that John's cousin Henry LOOP had resided in during the 1830 census. In the 1835 census he is listed as owning 5 acres, one cow, no horses, no sheep, and no pigs. He is the head of a family of six males and 3 females. Sometime between 1837 and 1839 John moved his family back to McKean County, PA, where their son Simon was born in Eldred about 1839. John LOOP died August 4, 1886, and is buried in the Loop Hollow Cemetery in Eldred. His wife Eliza is listed on his tombstone, but no date is given for her death, so that it is not certain she is buried there. The children of John LOOP and Eliza HOOKER were: + 1. Lewis Franklin LOOP, b. July 4, 1825, in NY, m. Nancy COOK, d. December 23, 1885, buried Cook Cemetery, Eldred, PA. 2. John LOOP, Jr., b. about 1827, in NY, m. about 1850, Emmeline BEST, d. September 11, 1905, buried Loop Hollow Cemetery, Eldred, PA. 3. Harrison LOOP, b. about 1829, in NY, m. 2nd. Emily ______. 4. Daniel LOOP, b. about 1829, in NY. 5. Lucinda LOOP, b. about 1832, in NY. 6. Horace LOOP, b. about 1834, in NY. 7. Eliza B. LOOP, b. about 1837, in NY. 8. Simon LOOP, b. about 1839, in Eldred, McKean, PA. 9. Fernando C. LOOP, b. about 1840, in Eldred, McKean, PA. probably the Fernando buried in Loop Hollow Cemetery, Eldred, PA. If so he served in the Civil War. 10. Amanda LOOP, b. about 1843, in PA. 11. Riverious LOOP, b. about 1846, in PA. 12. Zilpha LOOP, b. about 1848, in PA. Henry LOOP [Henry(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], was born January 27, 1804, in New York. In 1820 he was living with his father in McKean County, PA. He married Amy DIKEMAN. She was born 1808, in New York. Like his brother John, Henry moved to New York sometime before February 27, 1828. Their son Almond Henry LOOP, possibly their only child, was born that day in New York. Sometime near 1830 (probably before) Henry LOOP died. His wife remarried to William HOOKER with whom she is censused in 1850 in McKean County, along with her son Almond LOOP and many children by her marriage to William HOOKER. She died in 1883 in Manchester, Delaware County, Iowa. + 1. Almond Henry LOOP, b. February 27, 1828, in NY, m. January 22, 1850, Mary Melissa MOORE, d. June 27, 1912, in Manchester, Delaware, Iowa, buried there in Oakland Cemetery. Riverious LOOP [Henry(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], was born January 12, 1806, in New York. He was called "Vere". In 1820 he was living with his father in McKean County, PA. He married Mary Ann DIKEMAN. She was born May 6, 1812 in New York. All their children were born in Pennsylvania, and there is no indication that they ever left McKean County. She died February 21, 1876, he died May 4, 1879. Both are buried in the Loop Hollow Cemetery in Eldred. Their children were: 1. William LOOP, b. about 1827, in Eldred, McKean, PA. + 2. Philer LOOP, b. December 16, 1828, in PA, m. July 23, 1853, Emmeline M. DRAKE in NY. 3. Henry LOOP, b. about 1832 in PA. 4. Arthur LOOP, b. June 22, 1834, in PA, m. Lucinda ______, d. Riverious LOOP, Jr., b. about 1846 in PA. 10. Butler LOOP, b. about 1848 in PA, m. Martha J. ______. Rodolphus LOOP [Henry(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was born April 18, 1807. He was nicknamed "Adolf". Some records indicate he was born in Vermont, some that he was born in New York. In 1820 he was living with his father in McKean County, PA. In 1836 and 1837 he is listed as a tax-payer in Ceres township, McKean County. He married Phoebe ALDRICH, the daughter of Pliny and Lucina ALDRICH . She was born about 1822 in New York. Sometime around 1837 Rodolphus located in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County, New York, where he was a farmer. We know of only three children born to Rodolphus and Phoebe, two of whom died young. Phoebe's mother Lucina died sometime between 1860 and 1870, and her elderly father came to live with Rodolphus' family. Rodolphus died intestate prior to July of 1893, when his granddaughter Flora Mina ALEXANDER and friend William GOULD are made co-executors of his estate. Family members claim that his widow wrote them from Hinsdale in 1891, meaning he had died before that time. He is listed as deceased in a history of McKean County published in 1890. She was alive in 1892 and listed as an invalid. As she is not mentioned in his estate administration papers, it is possible that she died near 1893. Their children were: 1. Lynda A. LOOP, b. about 1847 in NY, m. 1st ______ WAKEFIELD, by whom one child (Ann W. WAKEFIELD) m. 2nd ______ ALEXANDER, by whom a child (Flora Mina ALEXANDER). 2. ______ LOOP, b. about 1856, d. 1857, buried Haskell Flats Cemetery, Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, NY. 3. ______ LOOP, another child, as in the 1865 census they are listed as having had three children. Daniel LOOP [Henry(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was born May 13, 1813, in Pennsylvania, probably in McKean County. He married, about 1839, Mary "Polly" DIKEMAN. She was born about 1817 in Vermont or New York. They moved to Cattaraugus County, New York and lived in Portville near his brother Rodolphus LOOP. There they had at least four children, one of whom died young. His wife Polly died sometime before 1880 when he appears alone living with his nephew Lewis LOOP in Eldred, McKean County, Pennsylvania. After his brother Rodolphus died about 1890, Daniel moved to Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska. It is not known when he died. 1. Charlotte C. LOOP, b. about 1841 in NY. 2. Mary B. She was born about 1824 in New York. He was her second husband. Her first husband was named ALDRICH. Norry and Clarissa had 15 children, all born in Pennsylvania and probably all in McKean County. Sometime around 1870 they moved to Ferry, Oceania County, Michigan, where they stayed until around 1890, when they moved to Bay View, Skagit County, Washington. There Norry died in 1898, and she in 1913. The children of Norry LOOP and Clarissa FROST were: 1. George LOOP, b. about 1840 in PA. May have died in Civil War. No children. + 2. Alfred Bruce LOOP, b. Obituary, The Owosso Weekly Press, Wednesday, December 6, 1876: Death of Mr. Jacob Loop. Died, Saturday morning, December 2, at his residence in the town of Bennington, Jacob Loop, aged 84 years, 2 months, and 14 days. Mr. Loop was born in Washington County, NY, served an apprenticeship of seven years in the printing business at Johnstown, then in Montgomery County, NY, abandoned the business at the age of 21 years and removed to Cayuga County in that state, where he married and was for several years a partner in the ownership and operation of a wool carding, dyeing, and cloth dressing mill. He was subsequently a resident of Wayne County for about nine years and removed thence with his family to Michigan in 1835, locating in the town of Pontiac, Oakland County where he improved a farm. He disposed of his property in Pontiac in 1857 or '58 and removed to Ohio where he resided near Toledo until 1861, when he came into Shiawassee County, bought the land, erected the buildings, and improved the farm in Owosso township now owned by Mr. Bilbeimer. After selling that farm he returned to this county and bought the farm where he died, in Bennington on the town line road between that town and Owosso. Throughout his long life Mr. Loop has maintained a reputation of unquestioned probity. He had belonged to the order of Free and Accepted Masons since his early manhood, having been made a Mason at Throopville, Cayuga County, NY, had been advanced through all the degrees to be a Knight Templar, and had been chosen to occupy various positions of honor and trust in the order. In his earlier days he was considered high authority in questions of Masonic law. He lived to cast his vote as a democrat at fifteen Presidential elections, and but for his inability to help himself he would have voted on the 16th occasion for Tilden. He was buried Sunday afternoon, by the Knights Templar, under the direction of P.G.C. Hugh McCurdy, of Corunna Commandery. Funeral services took place at the Maple River Baptist Church, Rev. Mr. Stimson, rector of Christ Church in this city, officiating. The concourse of Masonic brethren and neighbors was larger than could enter the house. ?????????????????????????????? QUERIES ????????????????????????????????? Please send responses to queries to the Loop Scoop. I will relay them to the person asking the question. 1. Henry H. Loop was born in New York between 1827 and 1836. He does not show up in Chautauqua County until the 1855 census of that county. There he is listed as the adopted son of Nicolas Thum and his county of birth is listed as unknown. He married Luana Marsh and lived in Chautauqua County until his death in 1911. On his death certificate his father is listed as John Loop. No mother is listed. Questions: Where was he born? Who were his parents? - Vick Bennison 2. Family info indicates father of Peter H. Loop b. 1766/7 d. 1855 Sandusky Co., OH, was Peter Loop Sr. b. 1743 Schoharie, NY, d. 1843 Woodstock, IL. Other info places Peter H. as the son of Ensign Henry Loop. Has anyone found records of a Schoharie NY Peter Loop, of a Peter Loop dying or buried at Woodstock (McHenry County) IL, or a marriage record of Ensign Henry's son Peter? My Peter Loop married Rebecca Gilbert, supposedly in 1790 at Schoharie, NY, and his tombstone has Peter Loop, JR. 1766 - 1855. - Joanne Ellis 3. I am seeking the parents of Jane Loop who married Jonathan Andrus (Andrews) of New York. Their child, Polly Andrews, born 3 APR 1791, died 17 DEC 1872 at Windsor, NY, she having married Ezra Barton on 28 NOV 1808 in Broome County, NY. Is there proof that she is the daughter of Peter Loop and Couysa Springer? - Dee Merritt 4. Who were the parents of Almond Loop, where and when were they born? Did he have any brothers and sisters? Almond was born 27 FEB 1828, in New York State, where? He was married in Bradford, Penn., to Mary Melissa Moore, 22 JAN 1850. They lived in Penn., until 1865 when they moved to Manchester, Iowa. He died 27 JUN 1912. I would like to know the parents of Mary Moore, where and when they were born. Mary was born in Jamestown, New York, 6 JAN 1836 and died 23 OCT 1901 in Iowa. - Vola Carter 5. Need maiden name, date/place of birth, date/place of death of Naomi (Barlow) Loop, wife of John L. Loop. Need date/place of birth, date/place of death of Ezra Loop, son of John L. and Naomi Loop. Ezra must have died between 1870 and 1880, probably in Richardson County, Nebraska. - Virginia L. Bachofer 6. [From the New York Biographical and Genealogical Record:] LOUP - WILSON. Parents and family of Mary Lane Loup, born about 1826, who married Robert B. Wilson of Bradford, [McKean County], Pennsylvania, about 1847, moved to Illinois 1858-1860, thence to Jessup, Iowa. - Mrs. R. J. Malone 7. Eunice (Ann?) Fry? where in New York state did William A. and Eunice (Loop) Fry live before they moved to Crawford County, PA? Is there confirmation that Eunice died in Iowa in 1848? - Jim Fry +++++++++++++++++++++++ NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS +++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. Joanne Ellis passed along some very interesting information. She obtained a copy of the application submitted to the "Graves Location Project" of the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 concerning the location of Peter H. Loop's grave. The purpose of the application seems to be to provide information to the organization and perhaps to obtain a metal 1812 marker for the grave. The application is dated 1941, and the informant is probably Wayne Dancer, who is listed as a descendant, though the form line for the name of the person filing the data is blank. But the funny thing is that the information given concerning his service seems to be for the Revolutionary War, not the War of 1812. There is mention of the Dutchess County Militia and Albany County Militia, which units had recruits named Peter Loop or Peter Loop, Jr., during the revolution, but no mention is made of the only unit in which Peter H. Loop actually served during the War of 1812, namely Captain Armstrong's company of Col. Brown's 23rd Regiment of Infantry. I think someone was fishing. The application says that descendants have Peter's 1812 discharge papers. Yet Peter himself in an affidavit said he was never given a discharge. The application also says that if the grave is not marked with a stone that the government will provide one and asks if one is desired. No response is given which makes me believe that the stone had already been provided. After all, Wayne Dancer was already a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and either he or someone else had probably already taken care of that. You will recall that the stone that was erected was a military type stone with the following inscription: Peter Loop, Jr., Pvt NY Militia, Rev War, 1766 - 1855 In the National Archives is a service record for a Peter Loop, Jr., private in Vanderburgh's Regiment of New York Militia, Albany County, dated September of 1778. I believe this is the only record for a Peter Loop, Jr., as a private, and I believe this is the record on which some hopeful descendant based their claim for membership in the SAR or DAR. In the affidavit, part of his application for land bounty for service in the War of 1812, Peter Loop (no "Jr.") says he is 83 years old. The affidavit is dated 30 DEC 1850. So for Peter to be 83, he would have to have been born sometime in 1767, not 1766 as his tombstone says. I think that someone fudged the date of birth by one year so that it might look like he could be almost 13 years old on the day of his supposed enlistment, whereas in fact he had only just turned 11 the previous month. Also, since Peter H. Loop never claimed to have served in the Revolution, though he did claim to have served in the War of 1812, I think we can now close the door on that possibility. But the good news for his descendants is that his father Ensign Henry Loop quite definitely did serve in the Revolutionary War. By the way, Peter H. Loop's service in the War of 1812 is a little bit clouded. In his affidavit, he claims he was left sick along a road in St. Lawrence County, NY, and was reported as dead, and that that is why he never received his discharge. An official investigating his application for land bounty, however, reports that he was listed as having deserted. We'll likely never know what really happened. 2. Joanne also writes concerning the Loop's in Woodville Cemetery: "I'm quite sure the broken stone is Wm H. Loop (son of Jediah Loop who was son of Peter H.) since his son, Willie H. is buried there. The GAR marker probably belongs with the broken stone. Wm H. Loop was born ca 1827 in Cayuga Co., NY and died 31 MAY 1862, Woodville, OH, from typhoid fever. He had been sent home from the Civil War after becoming ill. Wm H. married Sarah Webb who married second Thomas Smith. Sarah Smith died 27 JUL 1901 at Caro, Tuscola Co, MI." I'm sorry I didn't realize you lived so near Woodville, or I would have let you know I was coming, although the junket was pretty impromptu in the planning. Have you ever found the grave in Perrysburg for Rebecca (Gilbert) Loop? 3. Joanne Ellis - Thanks for the above information and all the other information on Peter H. Loop, et al. Please keep the info coming. You ask if I have proof for the birthplace of Peter H. Loop's daughter Betsy (Loop) Brim. No. In fact, I can no longer find where I got that piece of information. And I think you are quite right that Peter H. lived in Cayuga County in 1813, when he signed up there at Auburn for the War of 1812. So Betsy was most likely born there, since, as you point out, she was born two weeks after his enlistment. The obituary for Jacob Loop, Peter H. Loop's son, has Jacob moving to Cayuga County in 1813. Jacob is most likely the one censused in Cayuga County in 1820 when his father is already in Ohio, and censused again in Wayne County, NY, in 1830. The Cass County, Indiana, history says Peter H. Loop's son Henry, born 1793 was a native of Cayuga County, but this is unlikely, as the county wasn't formed until 1799 and Peter H. Loop is living in Washington County in 1800. And Henry and his wife Elizabeth Marsh were censused in 1830 in Johnstown, Montgomery County, NY. The obituary also tells us that Jacob lived in Johnstown, Montgomery County for 7 years prior to 1813, which means that the Peter Loop censused in Montgomery County in 1810 is Peter H. Loop. Concerning the 14 day enlistment of Peter Loop, Jr., in 1778, it was very common during the Revolution for locals to sign up for a single battle or short campaign. In fact, I believe most of the enlistments were like that. 4. Debra (Loop) Maier - writes to reassure us that the account book of Orange Spencer, is not missing. It's somewhere in her Aunt's house, but they haven't been able to find it for some time now. I hope it shows up soon. I sure would like to see a copy of that account book. 5. I think I now know how my Henry Loop fits into the picture. I need a few more verifying pieces of evidence, but I'm ready to tell you what I think is the story. And it is a complex one. I believe the Henry Loop in the 1830 census of Chautauqua County, NY, is the son of Andrew Loop, and the father of my Henry Loop. I believe he died before 1835, when John Loop ("Vermont" Henry Loop's son and the dead Henry's first cousin), is censused living in the same house in Chautauqua County. Now, if you think about it, three of these men (Andrew Loop, his brother "Vermont" Henry, and "Vermont" Henry's son John) all married women named Hooker. I believe that my orphaned Henry Loop was sent back to Onondaga County, NY, to live with Andrew's extended family. There he is the extra 21 year old Henry living with his Uncle Martin Loop in the 1850 census. By the 1855 census, he had moved back to Chautauqua County, and was working as a 26 year old hired farm hand for a man named Nicholas Thum. He was still working for him in 1860, but in 1864 he married Luana Marsh, bought a farm of his own, and settled down to raise a family. This scenario, if correct, would account for a number of things. My Henry was photographed with many of his wife's relatives, but never with any Loop relatives. His daughter was very uncertain about Henry's father (whom he probably lost at age 1 year), in one record calling him Henry and in another calling him John. No brothers or sisters were ever mentioned. He may have had some, but he did not seem to be close to them. In the 1855 census he (or an informant) calls himself the adopted son of Nicholas Thum. This was not literally true, and may have just been a joke, but one more likely to have been made by or about an orphan.
